Russell Wilson's sky-ball Hail Marry attempt is REJECTED by Browns

In a thrilling yet chaotic Week 12 matchup on Thursday Night Football, the Pittsburgh Steelers fell short in a snowy battle against the Cleveland Browns, losing 24-19. Heavy snowfall in Cleveland created dramatic conditions as both teams fought for control. Despite the loss, backup quarterback Justin Fields showcased his resilience and potential, even after a rocky start.

Fields’ Rollercoaster Performance

Russell Wilson remained the Steelers' starter, but head coach Mike Tomlin called on Fields in critical short-yardage situations. Unfortunately, his early contributions didn’t go as planned.

  • Early Struggles:

    • First Drive: A false start penalty on a third-and-1 erased Pittsburgh’s momentum.
    • Second Drive: On a fourth-and-2, Fields was stuffed for a two-yard loss by a relentless Browns defense.
  • Late Redemption:
Fields bounced back in the fourth quarter, breaking loose for a stunning 30-yard run. Moments later, he executed a flawless play fake, setting up running back Jaylen Warren’s touchdown.

While the Steelers came close, a late surge by Browns star Nick Chubb sealed the game.

Nick Chubb Shines in His Return

The Browns' running back made an emotional return to the field, marking his first game against Pittsburgh since suffering a severe knee injury 14 months ago. Chubb delivered a standout performance with two crucial touchdowns, including the game-winner in the final minute.

  • First Half: Chubb’s touchdown gave Cleveland a 10-3 lead going into halftime.
  • Fourth Quarter Magic: With just 57 seconds left, his second score solidified the Browns’ upset victory.

Jameis Winston Adds to the Drama

Browns quarterback Jameis Winston also made his mark, scoring his first rushing touchdown since 2021. His leadership in tough weather conditions helped Cleveland improve to 3-8, proving they’re far from giving up on the season.

Steelers’ Playoff Picture Takes a Hit

Despite the loss, the Steelers remain atop the AFC North at 8-3. However, the defeat opens the door for division rivals like the Baltimore Ravens, who face the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night.

For Wilson, this marked his first loss since taking over as the starter in Week 7. After leading the team to four straight wins, the veteran quarterback is still viewed as a stabilizing force.

Fields Reflects on His Journey

The decision to bench Fields after Week 6 sparked controversy but was ultimately justified as Wilson brought consistency to the lineup. Fields, however, remains a class act, embracing his new role with humility and determination.

In a postgame interview, Fields admitted:

"I mean, I don't think I've played good enough, if I'm being real with you. If I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of ‘who should be playing, who should not.’"

Fields has vowed to give 100% whenever called upon, whether on the field or supporting his teammates from the sidelines.

“I just do my job at the end of the day. Whether that’s playing or helping the guys on the sideline, I’m here to contribute in any way I can,” Fields added.

Looking Ahead

The Steelers will need to regroup quickly as the race for the AFC North heats up. With Wilson leading the charge and Fields ready to step in when needed, Pittsburgh’s resilience will be tested in the weeks ahead.
