IRS sending out $2.4 billion worth of stimulus checks: Are you eligible to receive one?

e

U.S. taxpayers may be in line to receive new stimulus payments by the end of January if they didn’t claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced these automatic payments, bringing much-needed financial relief to eligible individuals and families.

What Is the Recovery Rebate Credit?

The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit for individuals who didn’t receive one or more Economic Impact Payments (EIP), also known as stimulus payments, during previous distribution rounds. According to the IRS, internal data revealed that nearly one million taxpayers who were eligible for this credit failed to claim it when filing their 2021 tax returns.

“Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we’re making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it.”

Who Is Eligible for the Stimulus Payment?

Taxpayers who left the Recovery Rebate Credit field blank or filled it out as $0 on their 2021 tax return are eligible for the automatic stimulus payment. The IRS will send a notification letter to all eligible individuals confirming the incoming payment.

Additionally, those who didn’t file a 2021 tax return can still qualify for the stimulus check by filing their return and claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit by April 15, 2025.

How Much Money Can Taxpayers Receive?

The amount eligible taxpayers receive will vary, with the maximum payment being $1,400 per individual. Married couples filing jointly could receive up to $2,800, with an additional $1,400 per dependent under specific eligibility requirements. The IRS has estimated that a total of $2.4 billion will be distributed nationwide.

How Will the Payments Be Distributed?

The IRS began sending out these payments automatically in December 2024, and they are expected to arrive by the end of January 2025. Taxpayers will receive their payments either via direct deposit or by paper check, depending on the payment method chosen during their previous tax filings.

What If I Didn’t File a 2021 Tax Return?

If you didn’t file a 2021 tax return, it’s not too late to claim your payment. To receive the stimulus check, you must file your 2021 return and include the Recovery Rebate Credit. Visit IRS.gov to file electronically or for detailed instructions.

Looking Ahead: The $2,000 Economic Relief Package for 2025

While the Recovery Rebate Credit payments are set to wrap up in January, another potential financial relief opportunity has been making headlines. The U.S. government has proposed a $2,000 Economic Relief Package to assist Americans struggling with inflation. Although this program is not officially confirmed, it has been widely discussed as a possible measure to alleviate financial strain in 2025.

What Is the $2,000 Economic Relief Package?

The proposed $2,000 Economic Relief Package would be distributed as direct deposits to eligible taxpayers. The benefits aim to provide financial aid to individuals and families, helping them cope with the rising cost of living.

Proposed Payment Details:

  • Individuals filing taxes alone could receive up to $1,400.

  • Married couples filing jointly may receive $2,800.

  • Additional payments of $1,400 per dependent could also be included, subject to eligibility requirements.

The IRS is expected to distribute these payments based on income thresholds:

  • Individuals earning up to $75,000.

  • Heads of households earning up to $112,500.

  • Married couples earning up to $150,000 jointly.

Eligibility Criteria for the $2,000 Direct Deposit

To qualify for the $2,000 Economic Relief Package, taxpayers must:

  • Be U.S. citizens or legal residents living in the country.

  • Have filed their taxes before the specified IRS deadlines.

  • Meet specific income and asset requirements set by the IRS.

How to Claim the $2,000 Direct Deposit

While the program remains unconfirmed, here’s what taxpayers could expect if the package is approved:

  • Electronic refund requests may be processed within 21 days of filing.

  • Paper check requests could take up to 2 months.

  • Filing electronically and opting for direct deposit is the fastest way to receive benefits.

Key Takeaways for Taxpayers

  • The IRS is automatically distributing Recovery Rebate Credit payments to eligible taxpayers who didn’t claim the credit on their 2021 returns. Payments are expected to arrive by late January 2025.

  • Taxpayers who haven’t filed their 2021 returns can still claim their stimulus by filing before April 15, 2025.

  • Discussions about a $2,000 Economic Relief Package for 2025 are ongoing, but taxpayers should remain cautious and await official confirmation from the IRS before taking any action.
